CECE Postdoctoral Fellow Speaks on Demography and Climate Disasters

Dr. Julie A. González, Environmental Justice Postdoctoral Fellow at CECE, was featured on the podcast The Demographer’s Diary, hosted by Dr. Coda Rayo-Garza, to discuss how demographic research shows the human dimensions of climate disasters.
In the episode titled, “Demography and Climate Disasters,” Dr. González explained how population data such as age, housing, health, language, and mobility helps identify who is most affected by climate hazards such as heat, wildfire smoke, and flooding. She emphasized that demography provides the map of inequality needed to guide equitable climate and health policy.
Dr. González highlighted that systemic issues, including housing tenure, healthcare continuity, and insurance access, determine whether communities can recover after disasters. She underscored that demographic evidence must be central to climate planning, as it captures how risk is distributed and who remains unprotected under current systems.
Through this conversation, Dr. González advanced CECE’s mission to link environment, community, and equity by translating demographic research into practical insight on how climate change affects population health.
