2025 CECE Faculty Research Incubator Secondary Grant: What are the Socioeconomic Impacts of Hurricane Exposure in the US?
We are excited to announce a smaller, secondary award as part of this year’s selected CECE Faculty Incubator proposal, titled “What are the Socioeconomic Impacts of Hurricane Exposure in the US?”
This project comes from a collaboration across the College of Arts and Science, the School of Public Affairs, and the School of International Service. The research team, composed of Drs. Andrew Martinez (CAS-Departments of Economics), Gabriella Meltzer (CAS-Environmental Science and Health Studies), Claudia Persico (SPA- Public Administration & Policy), and Claire Brunel (SIS- Politics, Governance, & Economics), brings together disparate datasets on hurricane hazards, student test scores, school suspensions and absences, housing assistance, and domestic migration to assess the broad effects of hurricane exposure across the US.
About the Faculty Research Incubator Program: In 2023, CECE began this program, which is designed to launch exciting, interdisciplinary work on the environment that is conducted by faculty teams from programs across the AU campus. Teams receive funding to buy out courses or support summer salary. By the end of the academic year, teams are expected to have built out their projects, piloted the protocols, and submitted funding proposals for external funding.
