The most recent discussion in the Gamechangers in Sustainability speaker series took place last spring, on Earth Day. The Kogod School of Business concluded the Spring 2023 lineup with a panel of innovative women, to discuss how they have worked to create a more sustainable world.
The discussion was moderated by AU’s very own Danielle Vogel, who masterfully incorporated both her experience as a Kogod Professor and as an entrepreneur – having founded Glen’s Garden Market, a sustainable grocery store that has helped launch countless local food businesses.
The first panelist, Nicole McGrew, founded Threadleaf, a women’s clothing brand that puts emphasis on sustainably-made clothing. McGrew spoke on meeting challenges that arose during COVID, and how important it was to stay true to her values as she navigated the marketplace.
Monica Pearce, the second panelist, also faced challenges as she grew her Frederick-based company, Tenth Ward Distilling. She emphasized the importance of thinking about sustainability beyond an environmental standpoint, which she strives to demonstrate in her own business.
The panel was completed by Sara Polon, who founded Soupergirl, a soup brand that sources from farms that value both the well-being of the environment and the farm workers. Polon told the audience that “It’s up to us as businesspeople to start making different decisions.”
Throughout the event, each of the founders gave valuable advice to aspiring entrepreneurs, and answered audience questions at the end. You can find the recording of the forum here.
