Gabriella Meltzer

Assistant Professor, Environmental Science and Health Studies

Gabriella Meltzer is an assistant professor in the Departments of Environmental Science and Health Studies at American University. Dr. Meltzer’s research uses mixed methods to examine how exposures related to climate change influence health disparities at critical and sensitive periods of the life course, including pregnancy and infancy, childhood and adolescence, and older adulthood. 

Prior to arriving at American University, Dr. Meltzer was a postdoctoral research scientist at Columbia University’s Collaborative for Women’s Environmental Health. She holds a PhD in public health from New York University’s School of Global Public Health and completed NIEHS-funded postdoctoral training in environmental health sciences and epidemiology at Columbia’s Mailman School of Public Health.

  • Prenatal ambient heat exposure and birth outcomes in the NICHD-funded Global Network for Women’s and Children’s Health Research
  • Extreme heat exposure and physical and mental health outcomes among colonias youth in the Rio Grande Valley, Texas
  • Aging in Risky Environmental Areas (AREA) study
  • A pilot intervention addressing trash burning and child health with mothers in informal settlements in India
