CECE Post Doc Speaks on Health Risks from Pollution and Effects on Vulnerable Communities

Dr. Julie A. González, Environmental Justice Postdoctoral Fellow at American University’s Center for Environment, Community, and Equity (CECE), appeared on Telemundo’s Planeta Tierra in a coast-to-coast news segment to discuss the critical public health impacts of air pollution on vulnerable communities. During the segment, Dr. González explained how recent environmental rollbacks threaten clean air protections, increasing exposure to harmful pollutants, especially for communities of color living near highways, industrial sites, and other pollution sources. Emphasizing that air pollution is not just an environmental issue but a serious health crisis, she highlighted the disproportionate burden on Latino and Black neighborhoods, where residents face higher rates of asthma, cardiovascular disease, and respiratory illnesses. This interview is part of Dr. González’s ongoing work to raise awareness of the intersection between climate, health, and social equity, advocating for stronger policies to protect public health.
