Article: Accounting for Non-Economic Loss: Climate Displacement and the Meaningful Omission of the Intangible
Dr. Robert Albro, Research Associate Professor in the American University Center for Latin American and Latino Studies, recently published a new article in the International Journal of Cultural Policy on the necessity of incorporating into loss-and-damage policy the intangible, non-economic loss of cultural heritage incurred as a result of climate displacement. Titled “Accounting for non-economic loss: climate displacement and the meaningful omission of the intangible,” his paper walks readers through the “neglect of harder-to-define non-economic preoccupations of those displaced” in imaginings of loss-and-damage policy through case studies in Latin America and the Caribbean. The text demonstrates the need to expand our definition of loss and damage beyond economic dimensions to grasp and grapple with the full extent of the loss threatened by the climate crisis. The piece resonates as a call to action for climate and heritage policymakers alike: “If cultural loss is an immediate source of anxiety for displaced communities, we have yet effectively to account for the intangibility of such loss.”
